Why Volunteer

Rewarding for All

Our volunteers are of all ages and their commitments can range from an afternoon to a lifetime. From Grande Prairie to Medicine Hat, our volunteers are helping to bring out the champion in every Special Olympics athlete.

As a volunteer you will be able to:

  1. Share your passion for sport.

  2. Create friendships and build networks.

  3. Experience the enjoyment of helping others succeed in sport and reach their potential.

  4. Gain new skills for personal and professional development.

  5. Give back to your community.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteers are coaches, directors, committee members, officials and participate in special events.

Coaches provide sport training to the athletes in each location. Coaches must be at least 16 years old, while Head Coaches must be at least 18.

Program Volunteers

Programs require a diverse array of additional volunteers to ensure smooth operations. These roles encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from lane volunteers to team managers.

Provincial Board of Directors

Volunteers are elected each year at the Annual General Meeting to be a part of the Provincial Board of Directors.

Affiliate Management Committees

Develop, operate, and maintain Special Olympics programs at the community level. The committee is responsible to Special Olympics Alberta and its bylaws.

Special Event Volunteer

These volunteers are required for competitions, fundraising, and other such events throughout the year.

Special Olympics sports officials ensure adherence to the rules and safe competition, and are necessary to ensure the integrity of the sport.
