Leading through inclusion
What is Youth Leadership?
Youth Leadership is a key component of Special Olympics Alberta Champion Schools, empowering students of all abilities to become leaders in their schools and communities. Through meaningful leadership opportunities, students build confidence, develop their voices, and learn how to create positive change. By working together, students with and without intellectual disabilities foster understanding, friendship, and mutual respect.
Unity is the Future of Leadership
When young people of all abilities lead side by side, they help create more inclusive schools and stronger communities. Through shared experiences and collaborative leadership, students gain valuable skills, challenge stereotypes, and inspire others to embrace a culture of belonging. Together, they are shaping a future where everyone is valued, included, and empowered to suceed.

What is it about?
Youth Leadership Summit
The Youth Leadership Summit (previously held in Edmonton on December 15, 2025) empowers students with and without intellectual disabilities to become leaders of inclusion in their schools. Through interactive learning, collaboration, and leadership development, students gain the skills and confidence to create meaningful change and ensure everyone feels they belong.
What Students Will Learn
Participants will explore how to build and sustain Unified Clubs that bring students of all abilities together, create opportunities for Unified voices within student leadership teams, and plan inclusive school events and initiatives. They will also develop leadership skills through Unified training, learn how to mentor and support peers, and share the Unified Champion Schools movement with other schools and education leaders while promoting inclusion across their school communities.
Why It Matters
When students lead together, they create stronger school communities. The Youth Leadership Summit provides a space for young leaders to connect, share ideas, and develop action plans that bring inclusion to life in their schools. Students leave inspired and equipped to strengthen Unified programming, champion belonging, and lead initiatives that make a lasting impact.
