Unified Track and Field

What is Unified Track and Field?

How does Unified Track and Field work?

A Unified Track and Field team consists of the following:

A Special Olympics athlete is an athlete with an intellectual disability; typically, someone who is interested in sport participation, is competitive, and enjoys playing on a team.

A Unified Partner athlete is an athlete without an intellectual disability; typically, someone who is interested in sport participation, is competitive, and enjoys playing on a team.

The athlete and partner compete together in three different events. The 400 meter dash, long jump, and shot put to which their individual placements are scored and combined as an average.

How does a unified track and field team qualify for provincials?

Qualification Process

In our partnership with the ASAA (Alberta Schools Athletic Association), teams compete in their zones/area championships to qualify for provincials.

Depending on your zone/area, there may be more than one meet to move forward in the qualification process for provincials.

For instance, the Edmonton (Metro) zone have their schools, athletes and teams compete in a divisional and city meet where the top three teams in cities are then able to compete at provincials. Be sure to check in with your local track and field coordinator to know your qualification process.

Scores are ranked by team and given medals to the top three teams depending on the zone/area meet. This system is also how the winners are determined at provincials.
