Unified Cornhole

What is Unified Cornhole?

How does Unified Cornhole work?

A Unified Cornhole team consists of the following:

A Unified Athlete - an athlete with an intellectual disability; typically, someone who is interested in sport participation, is competitive, and enjoys playing on a team.

A Unified Partner - an athlete without an intellectual disability; typically, someone who is interested in sport participation, is competitive, and enjoys playing on a team.

Cornhole, can also be referred to as Bean Bag Toss or BAGGO, is a sport that is typically played against another team with two boards and eight total bean bags. The boards are placed twenty feet apart of each other (can be adjusted to ten or fifteen feet depending on the level of play and adaptations required) where the athletes and partners alternate throwing the bean bags in the hole of the board to score points.

How can I make the game suitable for all players?

What are other ways to play Cornhole?

Cornhole can be played in a variety of ways to make the experience and enjoyment accessible for everyone. There are two variations that are encouraged when playing the sport:

  1. Traditional: Typically, teammates play across from each other. Players throw behind the front edge of the board to ensure the game is being played fairly. Both teams take turns throwing towards the board across them with the goal of getting the bean bag in the hole. Traditionally games are played to 21 points, using cancellation scoring. Scores are determined as followed: 1 point for landing the bean bag on the board and 3 points for getting the bean bag in the hole. In most Unified Tournaments, games are played for a time duration (anywhere between 10-15 minutes) with the highest scoring team taking the win.

  2. Adaptive Focused: Depending on your athletes needs, players would start their throw from a position they feel most comfortable. Partners are open to assist the athlete's throw with verbal and/or visual cues. This variation of the game does not have to be played traditionally but rather accessible for everyone to enjoy and experience. Games can be scored the same, or you can play without cancelling and each team scores their bags.

In some tournaments, games are played with one board only and all players shoot from a designated spot (10-20ft across the board). This type play encourages team interaction and allows support when needed.

We highly encourage that you check in with your game/tournament organizer to clarify the rules and guidelines of your event!
