Unified Bocce

What is Unified Bocce?

How does Unified Bocce work?

A Unified Bocce team consists of the following:

2 Special Olympics athletes (individual with an intellectual disability) who are interested in sport participation, are competitive, and enjoy playing on a team.

2 Unified Partner athletes (individual without an intellectual disability) who are interested in sport participation, are competitive, and enjoy playing on a team.

Bocce is a sport that can be played both indoor and outdoor. The goal of the sport is to toss 4 bocce balls behind the foul line and get them as close as possible to the pallina. Both the players and teams take turn tossing the bocce balls. One set (3 games) are to be played. The closest team overall to the pallina will be the winner.

How can I make the game suitable for all players?

What are some important rules I need to keep in mind?

Unified Bocce is similar to cornhole as the game can be played to ensure the adaptation for all players are met.

Ramps are available to athletes who are unable to toss or roll a bocce ball.

To initiate the game, the pallina must be thrown by one of the players and must be past the halfway point of the court.

If the distance of a pallina may seem too far for the team, they may reposition/throw the pallina to a spot where it is comfortable for all players.

Teams would take turns throwing their bocce balls. Once both teams have thrown, the furthest team away from the pallina will throw next. The cycle continues until all balls have been thrown.

While there are many ways to go about scoring, we encourage all teams and players to be respectful to one another and to play at a level where everyone understands and is equal in judgement. Scoring can be done based on points or on time.

Bocce is meant to be fun! Keep and open-mind and be adaptive to what everyone needs to be successful in playing the sport!
