In a ceremony filled with pride and admiration, Special Olympics Team Alberta athletes were honoured for their remarkable achievements at the recent Special Olympics Canada National Winter Games. On Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, the athletes were invited to a reception hosted by the Honourable Minister of Tourism and Sport, Joseph Schow, to acknowledge their hard work and dedication.
The reception, held at Alberta’s Legislative building, was hosted in honour of the 95 athletes who represented Team Alberta at the National Winter Games in February 2024. The team returned home with a total of 78 medals, including 36 gold, 23 silver, and 19 bronze, which showcased the team’s skill and commitment across various winter sports.
The athletes, coaches, and Special Olympics Alberta staff who attended the gathering were honoured to have been invited to celebrate the athlete’s outstanding performance on the national stage. During the reception, Minister Joseph Schow conveyed his admiration and gratitude towards the athletes, expressing his pride in their unwavering determination and perseverance. He emphasized the commendable achievements of the athletes at the Special Olympics Canada National Winter Games, highlighting their ability to inspire through hard work and dedication to their dreams.
Following the reception, the athletes and coaches received a special invitation to observe the legislative assembly proceedings, where they were warmly welcomed by Ministers and Members of Parliament. To begin the session, the athletes were recognized and applauded for their outstanding achievements, fostering an atmosphere of pride and camaraderie.
All Special Olympics Alberta members who were able to attend this event left with a sense of gratitude and pride at seeing their incredible hard work be acknowledged at such a prestigious level.
For Team Alberta, the reception underscored the power of sports to unite communities and inspire individuals to pursue their aspirations. Departing with a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment, the athletes were grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful celebration of their achievements.
