The Special Olympics Alberta 2025 Provincial Summer Games happened from July 11th - 13th in the City of Grande Prairie.

The three-day Provincial Games event brought together hundreds of athletes from affiliate communities throughout Alberta, competing with heart, skill, and unshakable determination in ten sports: 10-pin bowling, athletics, basketball, bocce, swimming, soccer, softball, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, and golf.

The Games officially began with a vibrant Opening Ceremonies, where each community team was introduced and proudly walked into a cheering crowd. A powerful moment followed as members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) carried the Flame of Hope through the city and finished with the ceremonial lighting of the torch to mark the official start of the 2025 Provincial Games.

Throughout the weekend, competition was fierce, but the true spirit of the Games shone through the unwavering positivity, sportsmanship, and support shared among athletes. From roaring cheers on the sidelines to spontaneous high-fives between competitors, the atmosphere was one of unity and celebration.

“The most wonderful part of these Games is seeing the joy of the athletes,” said one spectator. “Special Olympics competitions are the most pure form of sport. There is no ego involved—everyone only wants to see everyone else succeed.”

Behind the scenes, a dedicated network of coaches and volunteers worked tirelessly to support the athletes. Coaches guided their athletes with passion and care, helping them reach personal bests and create unforgettable memories. Volunteers and staff made sure every detail ran smoothly, ensuring an experience worthy of the athletes’ incredible efforts.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who made this event possible: the organizing committee, SOA staff, volunteers, coaches, supporters, and most importantly, the athletes.
