Makenna MacWhinnie - Volunteer Highlight

Volunteer Recognition

Makenna MacWhinnie is an outstanding volunteer coach in Edmonton who helps bring the joy of sport to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Makenna MacWhinnie began volunteering with Special Olympics Alberta in 2021, however, her inspiration to give back to the community runs much deeper. Growing up, Makenna’s two best friends, Tyler and Paxton, both had autism. “We always had such a great bond, and I’ve always called them some of my best friends,” Makenna shared. This friendship ignited her passion to support other individuals with intellectual disabilities in the same way, leading her to explore coaching opportunities with Special Olympics.

For Makenna, the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer coach isn’t just about teaching sports—it’s about making meaningful connections. “Gaining bonds and trust with athletes is so fulfilling. We teach them not only about sports but also about day-to-day living and how to be good people. It’s cool to see it all come through,” she said.

Makenna’s advice for those considering volunteering with Special Olympics is simple yet powerful: “Don’t treat the athletes like they are any less than us. And have fun. We are all there to have fun.” Her message reflects the true spirit of Special Olympics, where the focus is on inclusion, socializing, and creating a positive, enjoyable environment for everyone involved.

As a volunteer, Makenna embodies the values of compassion and encouragement that make Special Olympics Alberta such an impactful organization. Through her dedication, she continues to help athletes not only grow in their athletic abilities but also in confidence and life skills.
