Faye St.Onge: Recipient of the King Charles Coronation Medal for Outstanding Community Contribution

Special Olympics Alberta's volunteer, Faye St.Onge, receives the King Charles Coronation Medal.

Faye St.Onge has been involved with Special Olympics for 39 years. Her involvement began in Calgary after registering her daughter in a local Special Olympics' program. She learnt that the local 5-Pin Bowling program was short on volunteers and graciously offered to fill the position.

"Special Olympics has meant a lot to our family," Faye shared. "We’ve met so many outstanding athletes, parents, and volunteers over the years. It’s been an incredible experience, and we’ve traveled to five different provinces for tournaments, provincials, and national games with athletes competing."

For Faye, her role with Special Olympics goes beyond volunteering. Over the years, she has served as Head Coach and Assistant Coach in various sports in both Calgary and Camrose, where she now resides. She has also taken on the role of Vice Chair for Special Olympics Camrose. Her coaching has spanned athletes of varying levels and backgrounds, always encouraging them to reach their full potential.

"The athletes just want to participate and do their best," she said. "I always tell them three things:

'Don't let anyone tell you what you can't do. Show them what you can do.'

'Make friends, have fun. If you win a medal, that’s a BONUS.'

And lastly, 'Don’t make Faye cry.'"

Her favorite part of being involved in Special Olympics is seeing athletes compete, giving their best, and growing into exceptional individuals. "Watching them compete, have fun, and show off their abilities— it’s truly inspiring," she shared. "It’s amazing to see them evolve into great athletes and people."

When Faye received the news that she had been awarded the King Charles Coronation Medal, she was both honored and surprised. "I was very surprised and humbled by this prestigious award," she admitted. "I will cherish it for years to come.” Faye even shed a few tears in joy and surprise.

As a key figure in her local Special Olympics community, Faye continues to inspire others with her selfless commitment and tireless work to ensure athletes have the support they need to thrive. Her award stands as a tribute to the countless lives she has impacted over the years, and her continued dedication to fostering an inclusive, empowering environment for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
