Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Partnership Program?

A Partnership Program is a sport program run by a local club, facility, organization, or service provider, with support from Special Olympics. These programs are typically integrated programs where athletes with an intellectual/developmental disability and athletes without an intellectual/developmental disability play together.

Even though the Partner leads the program, Special Olympics helps make sure it meets our standards and values. You’ll still be a Special Olympics athlete when you join.

How do I register?

Registration is usually done through the Partner, not directly with Special Olympics. Here’s how it works:

  • You sign up with the Partner (online, in person, or by contacting them).

  • They may ask for your permission to share your info with Special Olympics – this is to register you as a Special Olympics athlete in the program.

  • In some cases, you might need to register with both the Partner and Special Olympics.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

Fees are set by the Partner, and you’ll pay what their members pay. This means:

  • Costs may be higher than typical Special Olympics community programs.

  • You’re paying the club or organization directly. If the cost is a concern, please talk to the Partner or Special Olympics. Support may be available.

How is Special Olympics involved?

Even though the Partner runs the day-to-day program, Special Olympics is actively involved. We help by training coaches (at no cost to the Partner), providing equipment, promoting the program, hosting try-it days and events, supporting with administration and helping resolve any major issues.

You’re officially a Special Olympics athlete while participating in a Partnership Program.

What about competition?

We are working with our communities and affiliates to put a plan in place for athletes to participate in our competitions. Right now, Partner athletes are not in the Special Olympics Games cycle. This may change in the future.
