Special Olympics Alberta would like to provide an update to our members regarding Bill 29 - the Fairness & Safety in Sports Act, which was recently introduced in the Alberta legislature on October 31.
We want to assure you that we are actively following the progress of this bill, as it may have implications for organizations like ours. At this time, it remains unclear if Special Olympics Alberta will fall under the scope of this legislation, and we are awaiting further details to be outlined in the regulations, which are expected prior to the anticipated implementation date in Fall 2025.
Once we have more information on this matter, we will keep you informed of any updates or requirements that may arise.
As always, Special Olympics Alberta remains dedicated to the inclusion of all athletes with intellectual disabilities, regardless of their background, identity, or culture. We believe that our sports should be a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for everyone involved.
Thank you for your continued dedication and support for our athletes and programs. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Sue Gilchrist, CEO sgilchrist@soalberta.ca.
