ALBERTA LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN HISTORY

The Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is part of an international movement as the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers around the world have carried the “Flame of Hope” across 35 nations. In 2005, the international initiative raised US$21 million, with Canadian programs bringing in over $1.5 million. In 2005, Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run donated $183,605.14 to Special Olympics.

Since 2002, the Alberta LETR has grown by leaps and bounds, with its support of Special Olympics Alberta expanding at an amazing rate! For two consecutive years, they have been recognized at an international level for their remarkable efforts and progress.

2006 BIKE RIDE RAISED $95,000

Thank you to the 50 law enforcement members from the following Agencies for participating and making this year’s Law Enforcement 24 Hour Bike Relay the most successful yet: Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Regional Police Service, Blood Tribe Police, City of Spruce Grove and RCMP members in Assumption, Brooks, Calgary, Crowsnest Pass, Fort McLeod, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie Western Alberta, McLennan, Peace River, Raymond, Red Deer, Swan Hills, and Rocky Mountain Integrated Border Enforcement Patrol.

Riders departed from
Peace River, Fort McMurray, Brooks and Lethbridge.
Over the course of 24 hours, they covered 500 km, raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics in Alberta.  After covering the 500 km, riders were greeted by supporters at RCMP “K” Division Headquarters. The welcome ceremony was hosted by CTV Edmonton’s Joel Gotlib, and representatives from a number of Law Enforcement Agencies. This year, we are proud to report that the officers raised $95,000 through pledges and donations!

Thank you to the riders, as well as everyone who came out to cheer them on!

TORCH RUN SIGNATURE EVENTS:

“Final Leg: Guardians of the Flame of Hope”

Every two years, officers from around the world run the Flame of Hope into the opening ceremonies of Special Olympics World Games.

In February 2005 Detective Theresa Garagan from the Calgary Police Service represented Alberta in Nagano, Japan. Inspector Paul Manuel of the Calgary Police Service also participated as a run team leader. The Alberta LETR will again be represented in Brandon Manitoba, carrying the flame in the Final Leg for the 2006 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.

“Free the Fuzz: The Wal-Mart Sit”

This annual event, where law enforcement personnel make their home on the Wal-Mart roof, occurs annually across the province, with more locations added each year. Officers approach Wal-Mart shoppers to make donations in order to “free the fuzz” from the roof. With a festival-like atmosphere, this event is fun for the whole family.

Also watch for Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run T-shirts to be on sale at a Wal-Mart in your area!

“Cops and Lobsters”

Cops and Lobsters is a fun-filled fundraiser by law enforcement agencies and Red Lobster to raise money for Special Olympics. Police Officers, Correctional Officers, and other local law enforcement agencies serve guests at Red Lobster restaurant. Their “tips” are actually donations to Special Olympics.

With Tip-A-Cop, local law enforcement officers are working side-by-side with your server at local restaurants to bring great meals to your table. Like Cops and Lobsters, their tips are donated to Special Olympics.

Watch for a restaurant near you to co-host these fun-filled fundraisers this year. Officers work side by side with the servers, to provide great service and a fun dining experience to patrons. All tips generated for the officers are donated to Special Olympics.

Cops & Lobsters 2006 was a huge success! The Edmonton and Calgary events raised $26,000!

"2008 Law Enforcement Ride for Special Olympics "

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), in partnership with Special Olympics Alberta held its annual Bike Ride fundraiser, June 6th-7th.
As part of this fundraiser law enforcement members biked to Edmonton from Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Grande Prairie and Peace River within a 24 hour period. All funds raised were donated directly to Special Olympics Alberta, to be used for programming.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run Bike Ride has raised about $340,000 for Special Olympics Alberta since its inception in 2004. The fundraiser is a testament to the level of support athletes with developmental disabilities receive from law enforcement agencies around the province.
