Volunteer Appreciation Special Olympics Red Deer held it's annual Christmas party and volunteer/sponsor recognition evening on Sunday December 11th. Nine individuals were honored with long service awards ranging from 5 to 30 years and a number of long time sponsors were recognized for their ongoing support of the affiliate. Over 300 people enjoyed a turkey supper and entertainment and the evening was capped off by a visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus and two elves who greeted the athletes and disributed candy bags.
One hundred forty athletes and coaches attended the annual Special Olympics Red Deer swim meet on February 4th. Swimmers from 11 communities participated in the one day event that was a qualifier for the 2013 Spring Games. After a hard day of competition everyone enjoyed a roast beef supper followed by the awarding of competition ribbons and presentation of event mementos. Fall and winter programs are winding up in the next couple of months. Spring and summer programs including golf, softball, athletics and soccer will start in May. Competition was tough at the annual swim meet. |

Sports Offered: 5-Pin Bowling 10-Pin Bowling Aquatics Athletics Curling Floor Hockey Golf Outdoor Soccer Indoor Soccer Softball Tip-A-Cop Cora's restaurant in Red Deer will host a Tip-A-Cop day on April 21st. The Red Deer Law Enforcement Torch Run committee is organizing the event in cooperation with the restaurant and the Red Deer Affiliate. Other LETR events will be held later in the year.
