In June the Red Deer "Rocks" curling team received a Mayor's Recognition Award from Mayor Morris Flewwelling at a presentation ceremony. The team consisting of Graham Kryzanowski, Michael Sugden, Thomasina Payne, Kelly Stock and Rhonda Schochenmaier won gold medals at the National Games in St. Albert. They were coached by Heather Roberts and Gene Sale.
The annual Celebrity Breakfast sponsored by the Red Deer Motor Dealers Association was held on June 19th. Guest speaker was Amber Thomas a paralympian swimmer who competed at the London Games. The event is an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics Red Deer and this year brought in $20,000.00.
Free-The-Fuzz the weekend of August 23-25 was a great success with $25,000.00 being raised for Special Olympics through the efforts of members of law enforcement community. The officers and local athletes solicited donations from the public and entertained shoppers at Wal-Mart with their dance moves.
