News & Highlights
The Law Enforcement Torch Run event Free Our Finest ran over 19-21 August in Red Deer. Thanks the community sponsors, Wal-Mart and the people of Central Alberta, almost $18000 were raised for Special Olympics.
Over 100 athletes and volunteers attended the annual spring wiener roast wind-up on June 14th at Rotary Park. The weather cooperated and everyone enjoyed the food, the fellowship and the prizes. A big thank you to those who cooked the wieners, served the hot dogs, chips and pop and organized the prize give away.
We had a significant increase in outdoor soccer participation this year with 20 registered players and three coaches. The group practiced each Tuesday evening and by the end of the year there was a marked improvement in the players skill level and tactical knowledge of the game. For the first time in many years we sent a team to a tournament in Edmonton where they won the "C" division. This bodes well for 2017 when we will be sending the same team to the Summer Games in Medicine Hat. Congratulations to Brady, Mike and Ali for a super job of coaching and thanks to Joanne for her help at the Tournament.
In just its second year the Bocce program grew to 22 registered players with three coaches and a number of parents and caregivers helping out. The team took part in two tournaments, one in Edmonton and one in Calgary where they acquitted themselves well on and off the field earning kudos from other teams for their sportsmanship. Six players and two coaches will be attending the 2017 Provincial Games in Medicine Hat. Thanks Jan, Brenda, Joanne, Russ, Ed and others for running a great program.
Cops & Crepes 2016
Cora's annual Cops and Crepes was recently held in Red Deer. The event raised just over $3,700.00 from both direct donations and through merchandise sales. We were fortunate to have two beautiful days outside so we were able to display our merchandise outside and attract customers to the restaurant. We also worked hard to have media attention for the event; announcements were made on the radio throughout the weekend and the Red Deer advocate stopped in to take some photos.
Red Deer's swim program has a new crop of young swimmers this year that bring excitement and enthusiasm to the pool.
