Competition

In addition to regular training there are opportunities for athletes to compete at local, regional, provincial, national, and international levels. Competitions provide athletes with opportunities to demonstrate their sport skills. Special Olympics athletes, like all dedicated athletes, strive for their best performance at each competition.

Athletes of all ability levels are encouraged to participate. The practice of divisioning athletes for competition based on their abilities is fundamental to the Special Olympics program. This practice ensures that all athletes experience equitable competition.

In addition to Special Olympics competitions, athletes compete in a number of integrated competitions. While competing in their own division, Special Olympics athletes participate in all aspects of integrated competitions alongside generic athletes. Integrated competitions provide another opportunity for Special Olympics athletes to be active participants in their communities.
