Special
Olympics Alberta is excited to announce the creation of two new program
initiatives, Active Start and FUNdamentals, which promote the
development of basic motor and sport skills for young children with
intellectual disabilities.
Active Start

FUNdamentals
* Children aged 7-10
* Exciting atmosphere
* Introducing fundamental motor skills
* Innovative sports

Both Active Start and FUNdamentals promote
proper nutrition, education, social networking and an introduction to
the amazing opportunities available through Special Olympics Alberta.
This
fall, as part of our new Young Athletes program, Special Olympics
Alberta will host two YOUTH GAMES events in Edmonton and Calgary. These
fun-filled field days will be an introduction to the programs for
prospective athletes and their families.
Youth Games
Youth
Games is a half day event for children aged 6 to 13 with intellectual
disabilities and their families. The day will feature an opening
ceremonies, games and activities and closing ceremonies and ribbon
presentations. It is designed to help youth learn about the Special
Olympics Young Athletes program and provides an opportunity to
participate in a unique Special Olympics experience. The Youth Games
activities are developmentally appropriate and focus on skill
development in a fun, warm and inviting atmosphere.
For
parents, the Youth Games will provide information about the Young
Athletes program and the physical, social and psychological health
benefits of physical activity and participating in Special Olympics
programs. It will provide an opportunity for parents to interact with
Special Olympics coaches, hear from Special Olympics athletes and
network with other parents.
